Roy's Wood

The late Roy Hood was known throughout the village of Loose and the surrounding area. He lived his entire 83 years in Church House in Church Street, Loose.

At the Parish Council meeting December 2013, shortly after his death, Chairman Vianne Gibbons asked councillors to consider what might be a lasting tribute to Roy, whose family have lived and worked in Loose for several generations. In her words, she thought it should be ‘big and made of wood’ in view of the fact that trees and their well-being were his great passion (along with gullies and streams!).

Because of this passion, and Roy’s association with the Kent Men of the Trees, it was suggested that a number of trees be planted in the top corner of Brooks Field (the field next to the stream in the village) creating ‘Roy’s Wood’ as a lasting memorial to the ‘unofficial Mayor of Loose’. The field is owned and managed by Loose Parish Council, upon which, amongst his many other activities, Roy served as a parish councillor for over 40 years.

Kent Men of the Trees offered to provide the trees, and volunteers helped with the planting. Villagers, including those in the Loose Amenities Association working parties, worked with the Loose Parish Council to prepare the land in question and today "Roy's Wood" is a fitting legacy and a peaceful memorial wood for all to enjoy.
